Do you usually forget the things you studied last night or last weekend? Are you nervous during classes? Don’t worry, help is here. Some students shared their most effective English study tips for everyone to read. Are you ready to improve your English? Read on:
1. Vocabulary
“First, I check the meaning of the word and second I review the vocabulary and its spelling. Finally, I confirm how to use the vocabulary through sample sentences. I usually speak the vocabularies in my mind.” (Shota Ariga)
“Just repeat, repeat, and repeat. Write and speak the word together.” (Edith Ding)
2. Pronunciation / Reading
“When I practice reading, I usually use mp3 files – listening to the file, reading the script, then trying to mimic. It’s helpful not only in improving pronunciation skills but also speaking skills.” (Kim U Hyun)
3. Expressions / Idioms
“You have to memorize and use it. Just try to review and use it in daily life.” (Xuan Son Mac)
“Try to accumulate a lot of expressions daily.” (Edith Ding)
4. Writing
“I choose a topic a week and I write an essay on it. Then I ask my teachers what is wrong with my essay and which words are rarely used. If I make some errors, I can remember the corrections easily.” (Mia)
5. Listening
“Try to listen at least three times. The first time is for finding the main idea. On the second time, try to listen sentence by sentence and write down everything you hear and try to understand. Use the final time for review.” (Xuan Son Mac)
6. Speaking / Discussion
“Just try to speak a lot even during break time. Make friends with teachers so you can talk with them outside of classes and practice your English.” (Noriomi Kato)
7. Grammar / Pattern
“We should have separate books and notes – one for vocabulary and one for grammar. We should understand not only the phrase but also understand the entire sentence. Firstly, when I study, my method is remembering the sentence first prior to learning the logic behind it. It’s the fastest way and it has ingenuity. Next is to understand the parts of speech and prepositions. The parts of speech and preposition are the most basic of basics. If they can’t understand it, they won’t understand grammar fully. Learning English needs piling up of knowledge.” (Keisuke Uchida)
